Mercedes keen to retain Schumacher

22 February 2012

Unsurprisingly, one of the chief talking points in Barcelona this week is the future of Michael Schumacher, whose three-year contract with Mercedes ends in 2012. The seven-time Champion returned to F1 in 2010, but is yet to enjoy a podium finish with the Brackley-based outfit which became Champion as Brawn GP three years ago.

When quizzed over the outfit’s driver line-up, Team Principal Ross Brawn was adamant that Schumacher would be the prime selection. “Our first choice will definitely be Michael, before asking anybody else,” Brawn explained to Germany’s Bild. “Mercedes will just wait for an indication from Michael.”

Schumacher was giving away less clues when asked by the media about his future.

“We have strengthened our team and it’s very strong now,” he said. “I expect that we can improve our pace of development and I will decide when the time is right to say something.”

Schumacher drove the Mercedes F1 W03 in Barcelona on Tuesday, setting the sixth quickest lap time. Alternating with team-mate Nico Rosberg, he will drive again on Thursday.
