Petrov feared F1 career was over

23 February 2012

Vitaly Petrov admits that he suffered three months of believing he would not return to the Formula 1 grid. The Russian, a podium finisher at the start of last year, was dropped by Lotus Renault GP before finally being taken on by Caterham this month.

Petrov’s Caterham drive was announced after the first pre-season test of 2012 in Jerez, joining Heikki Kovalainen and replacing the ousted Jarno Trulli. When asked by GPUpdate.net if he doubted a comeback this season, the Vyborg man replied:

“Of course. That is what I was a little bit afraid about because I didn’t want to miss a year of driving, because otherwise coming back would be almost impossible or very, very difficult. I would say it was three months of difficult times because you didn’t know what you would be doing – driving, sitting at home, going to school or whatever!”

Due to the lack of preparation time, he is not yet fully at home in his new car.

“The steering and pedal position is alright, it was really that we just had a short time to make a new seat,” he explained. “They have done the maximum they can do. I am quite comfortable; it’s just the left-hand side, the shoulder and my legs, which are a little bit uncomfortable but, anyway, I will continue to work with this seat and I hope (on Thursday) that it will be more comfortable to drive.”

Although his maiden rostrum result was achieved in Melbourne almost 12 months ago, Petrov is perhaps still best known for his consummate defensive driving in front of Fernando Alonso at the title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of 2010.
