Montoya escapes fireball crash at Daytona

28 February 2012

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya was fortunate not to suffer injury as he was at the heart of a bizarre and highly dangerous incident in the Daytona 500 on Monday night. After losing control of his car because of a mechanical problem, the Colombian collided with a jet-powered machine being used to dry the race track.

It was a scary incident and one from which all parties involved were lucky to escape from unscathed. In the minutes before the crash, Montoya reported an issue with his #42 car and pitted for checks; the problem persisted and forced the car to turn sharp right when the Bogota man shifted up into fourth gear, collecting the jet dryer vehicle.

“Every time I got on the gas, I could feel the rear squeezing,” Montoya explained, believing the problem was transmission-related. “When I was telling the spotter to have a look how the rear was moving, the car just turned right.”

A rapid response by the fire crew prevented a destroyed track and premature end to the event. Following a red flag, the race resumed for its final 40 laps minus any issues at Turn 3, with Matt Kenseth of Wisconsin celebrating victory.
