Marussia has released an official launch photo of its 2012 Formula 1 car, the MR01. The shot came via Twitter on Monday morning, with the team now conducting a day of filming at Silverstone as HRT does likewise in Barcelona.
Shortly after the Twitter photo was released, the team issued an official press release entitled ‘A New Car. A New Philosophy’. Following the departure of Nick Wirth and his Wirth Research company, which focussed on computer design only, the outfit formerly known as Virgin Racing is now using windtunnel technology, with ex Renault employee Pat Symonds staying on-board as Technical Consultant.
For 2012, Germany’s Timo Glock remains but is joined by his third new team-mate in as many seasons, with Frenchman Charles Pic stepping up from GP2. Unsurprisingly, as Marussia is involved in a technical partnership with McLaren, the car is only the second on this year’s grid not to feature a dropping nose cone section.
“We are very pleased to be running the new MR01 for the first time this morning,” says Team Principal John Booth. “It has been a long and frustrating wait for everyone in the team but we can now get back on track – literally – and start working towards the first race of the season in Australia next weekend.
“Today is the first of two promotional events so, while the drivers will be able to get a feel for the car, they won’t be able to draw any real conclusions until we start running in anger in Melbourne. Nevertheless, this is an important day for us and we’ll enjoy every minute on track with the new car.”
Monday's press release did not specifically mention whether the final, aforementioned crash test has now been successfully passed.
