Ricciardo still going for points at home

Daniel Ricciardo insists that a points finish remains the target in his debut home race. As the Perth man joined F1 at last year’s British Grand Prix, he is yet to compete in Australia, but is confident that Toro Rosso can challenge for a top ten result.

“Finishing in the points is the real goal I am after,” the 22-year-old told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday, echoing his sentiments of January. “I guess we'll see where our performance is at in qualifying on Saturday. We'll try to have the best race we can, but anything is possible.

“Even if qualifying doesn't go to plan, we have a long race on Sunday so I'll be staying positive; I've got to make sure I finish in front of (Jean-Éric Vergne, team-mate) but I think we're definitely going to get the most out of the car and, from the team's point of view, that is very important.”

British Formula 3 Champion of 2009, Ricciardo narrowly missed out on the 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 title before making his F1 entry with HRT last season.
