Jenson Button was thrilled to take victory in for the third time in Melbourne on Sunday, leading home Sebastian Vettel and McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton. The 2009 World Champion, admitting he was ‘all excited’ to draw alongside Hamilton on the run to Turn 1, out-braked his title predecessor before controlling the pace commandingly.
“That was very special and to start the year with victory is important,” he said. “I think this puts us in a great position, so a big thank you to everybody in the team. I’m very excited about Malaysia but not thinking about it too much right now – first, I will enjoy this with my friends and family, then turn my attention to Malaysia tomorrow.”
He admitted that, following his second and final pit-stop, the deployment of the Safety Car posed a threat and a worry.
“When you’re leading by ten seconds it is great, but when the Safety Car comes out and it’s 6pm your tyre temperatures are soon lost, so that was a big worry,” the Frome man continued. “I managed to keep the heat in them and saved lots of fuel, so that was very important for us. I then got a good restart, which I was very happy about, and controlled the pace to the end of a pretty amazing day.”
The win is Button’s 13th in Formula 1, equalling the amounts of British compatriot David Coulthard and Alberto Ascari, World Champion of 1952 and 1953.
