Double top eight result for Toro Rosso
23 March 2012 – After Daniel Ricciardo impressed by scoring points on his Toro Rosso debut in Melbourne, with Jean-Éric Vergne missing out by the narrowest of margins, the duo continued to raise eyebrows at Sepang on Friday. In second practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix, the Australian-French combination finished in fifth and eighth places.
“I’ve driven here before in Formula BMW, but when you switch to a Formula 1 car the notes go out the window!” Ricciardo laughed. “But, all the same, it helps to have some previous track experience. The simulator work has probably been more useful to me. The track is quite technical and I think we made a good step forward this afternoon, compared to the morning which was quite difficult.”
“I’ve driven the track at the simulator a lot but they don’t have the heating turned to maximum in Milton Keynes!” Vergne also jested. “I think today went well for us; I had a strong long run this afternoon, when my pace was good and Daniel’s lap time showed we have a good car. I feel quite confident and happy with how things are going.”
