Saturday brought a disappointing end to Malaysian qualifying for Jean-Éric Vergne, who found himself on the sidelines at the earliest possible point. The rookie starts 18th for Toro Rosso, three places behind team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.
“I think the problem was just myself,” the Frenchman told reporters in the paddock. “I made a mistake then had a vibration, so had to come back to the pits and that was the end of my qualifying. It is of course disappointing, but it could rain tomorrow and be a great race. I’ve saved one set of Options.”
When asked how high he can rise in Sunday’s race, which could be wet, Vergne replied: “The front.” In Australia last weekend, he missed out on a maiden point as Paul di Resta pipped him at the finish line.
