2012 Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Jenson Button could only smile after losing out on a chance to win in Malaysia on Sunday, through fault which he could only describe as his own. A lap after the restart, the 2009 World Champion – who had jumped team-mate Lewis Hamilton – ran into the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan as the pair battled for position at the Turn 9 hairpin.

“I was struggling to keep the tyres up to temperature,” Button explained to reporters. “It was totally my fault; I hit the brakes and locked the rears so I couldn’t do anything but hit him, really. A tough afternoon, it just spiralled out of control.

“What could have gone wrong did (laughs). All I can do is laugh, really, it was so bad today. I won’t be looking at any of the footage on TV of this race - I’ll just put this behind us and move on to China.”

After struggling home to 14th behind Nico Rosberg, the Australian Grand Prix winner drops to third in the championship, ten points behind new leader Fernando Alonso.
