HRT appoints Cuquerella as Technical Director

2 April 2012

HRT announced on Monday afternoon that Toni Cuquerella has taken on the role of Technical Director. The Spaniard fills the position formerly held by Geoff Willis, now at Mercedes, and Jacky Eeckelaert. The position of Technical Director has not been occupied at HRT since Willis’ departure last September.

Cuquerella will take control of all activities related to the design and development of HRT’s F112, as the team continues to restructure. In 2008, he was Race Engineer to Robert Kubica when the Pole won the Canadian Grand Prix.

“The role of Technical Director implies a great amount of responsibility in terms of coordination and decision making,” he explains. “That’s why I’m very proud that the management considers me to be the most adequate person to carry it out. Until now, there had been a lot of dispersion from within the technical team and that had its repercussions in the concept and quality of the F112.

“My priority is to solve the current car’s problems to then develop it to its maximum potential, whilst also unifying and expanding the technical department; I’m confident that we have a good work base and a clear direction to advance and have a good project for the future.”

Team Principal Luis Pérez-Sala sees Cuquerella’s promotion as a further step in the right direction for the squad which has finished 11th overall for the past two seasons.

“Toni Cuquerella has been a key figure in the team since its inception and, above all, in this new stage,” says Pérez-Sala. “The transition from the previous project to this one hasn’t been easy and a lot of work has been carried out that, without vital figures such as him, wouldn’t have been possible…and because of his experience, judgment and knowledge, Toni’s profile fitted in perfectly”.

Turning 39 next Saturday, Cuquerella hails from Gandía in the Valencian Community and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. In 1999, he became a Race Engineer for Campos GP in the Open Nissan championship and has since worked in the WTCC with SEAT.

He made his F1 debut as a Super Aguri Race Engineer in 2006 before switching to BMW two years later, working with Kubica. In 2009, he backed Adrián Campos’ F1 entry and became the Chief Race Engineer for Campos Meta, although the team did not make the grid; the outfit became Hispania Racing (now HRT), where he has been Chief Race and Test Engineer since it joined the grid.
