Schumacher to mentor Mercedes Junior Team

Schumacher to mentor Mercedes Junior Team

3 April 2012

Mercedes has re-established its Junior Team for 2012, meaning a return of dramatic poses and leather jackets - as previously seen with Michael Schumacher when he partnered Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger in 1990. The seven-time Word Champion is now serving as role model to Germany’s Christian Vietoris, Spaniard Roberto Merhi and Robert Wickens of Canada.

The new Junior Team trio will spend 2012 in DTM, piloting the brand-new Mercedes AMG c-class Coupé as 91-time Grand Prix winner Schumacher watches on.

“I clearly remember the early stages of my career and what I gained from my time in the Mercedes-Benz Junior Team - both on and off the track,” says Schumacher. “It taught me the best way of working with the engineers and helped me build a professional relationship to the media.

“I'm excited to see how Christian, Roberto and Robert develop - they're certainly going to have a great time - and I enjoyed meeting them in Barcelona to offer a few tips from my own experiences. Being selected as a member of the Mercedes-Benz Junior Team is really something to be proud of.”

After Schumacher competed in sports cars with a Sauber-Mercedes prototype, Peter Sauber helped pave the way towards his Formula 1 debut with Jordan in 1991.
