Pastor Maldonado is looking forward to the Chinese Grand Prix more than most, by virtue of the fact that the Shanghai International Circuit is one of his preferred venues on the current Formula 1 calendar. In his first race at the track last year, the Venezuelan driver finished in 18th place as Williams struggled.
“Shanghai is one of my favourite circuits on the calendar so I am really looking forward to the race,” the 2010 GP2 Champion said on Tuesday.
“The circuit has a nice combination of slow and medium-speed corners and good sequences that are fun to drive. It is also very challenging because it is difficult to get close to the car in front to take advantage of the long DRS zone. We have shown good pace in the first two races and hopefully we can continue to improve here and pick up some points.”
In pre-season testing, the Grove squad floundered in particular with slow-speed corners, although team-mate Bruno Senna is pleased with progress so far.
“The car is performing well and showing strong pace, so I am confident about our chances in China,” the Brazilian comments. “I have not raced there for two years so I will have to work hard to re-learn the track, but I have good memories of the circuit.”
Williams’ best Chinese result to date is Juan Pablo Montoya’s fifth place in the inaugural race for the country eight years ago.
