Friday morning in China saw Giedo van der Garde take to the track in his first F1 practice session of the season. However the Lotus reserve driver, who was in Vitaly Petrov’s car, did admit his frustration at a lack of running because of the weather.
As Lewis Hamilton set the pace for McLaren, van der Garde ended the 90-minute period in 19th place with a total of 11 laps to his name.
“Not the best conditions for my first FP1, although I enjoyed it a lot,” the Dutch GP2 driver said on Twitter shortly after the session. “I had only three laps in the dry in the end. Looking forward to next time…”
Also running was Williams reserve Valtteri Bottas, who is driving Bruno Senna’s car on Fridays across the season. At Force India, Jules Bianchi occupied Paul di Resta’s machine and was in the cockpit for the first time since crashing in Jerez testing.
