Bahrain’s first ever DRS zone has been placed on the main straight of the Sakhir circuit. The overtake-aiding system was introduced last year and Bahrain should have been the first country to host a Formula 1 race which included it, but the event was cancelled because of civil unrest.
With the detection beam placed 108 metres before Turn 14, drivers within a second of the car in front (from the third lap after the start or a restart) will be able to use DRS from 270 metres after the final corner, boosting passing opportunities into Turn 1.
KERS - the other tool designed to help overtaking in F1 - has already had an outing at Sakhir, as a handful of teams were running with it in its earliest form three years ago.
