Räikkönen 11th but saves a set of tyres
21 April 2012 – Kimi Räikkönen will start only 11th at Sakhir on Sunday, with the Finn having been knocked out of Q2 qualifying when team-mate Romain Grosjean improved his lap time. However, the 2007 Champion hopes an extra set of tyres will assist him.
“We don’t have enough speed but we have saved one set of tyres, so not going back out was the reason we didn’t get in,” Räikkönen explained in the paddock.
“We have that extra set of tyres for tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens. It’s more difficult here than it was in China, but as I say we’re trying to save the tyres to see if that benefits us tomorrow.”
Of his six Bahrain Grands Prix to date, Räikkönen’s best race finishing position is second behind then Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa four years ago. He has finished on the podium four times in total; twice each with McLaren and Ferrari between 2005 and 2008.
