Sebastian Vettel’s Bahrain Grand Prix pole is not only his second in succession at Sakhir, but the first of the season for reigning World Champions Red Bull. The German has dedicated the achievement to his colleagues in the team.
“It’s great, obviously, and I’m giving this one to the guys,” he said shortly after qualifying. “It hasn’t been an easy start to the season but we’ve worked on this car.”
After arguably making a mistake on setup in China last weekend, Vettel is now running the same b-spec exhaust as team-mate Mark Webber, albeit with slight differences.
“It was good to get a straight comparison again,” he continued, having sealed pole by a tenth of a second from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. “We have found that both packages have their own advantages, but ended up running the new car here.
“We’re now a bit happier all round. The race is long here and a lot can happen, but we’ve been pretty aggressive and should be better off in the race (than qualifying).”
Vettel’s previous pole came in Brazil at the end of 2011. The 31st of his career moves him to within one of Nigel Mansell and a top five position in the all-time rankings.
