At the tail end of the Formula 1 field, there were smiles for Charles Pic on Saturday as the French rookie out-qualified more experienced Timo Glock for the first time. As the German could manage no more than 23rd place because of a poor balance, his 22-year-old team-mate managed to seal 20th spot on the Bahrain starting grid.
“Not an easy day today, but I am quite happy with the result.” said the Marussia man, who is the second youngest driver in the field after 21-year-old compatriot Jean-Éric Vergne.
“This afternoon it was much hotter than forecast and the tyre degradation was maybe a little worse with the rears; we seem to have managed this quite well, though, and generally the team has done a good job through the day to keep pushing forward.
“The race will be tough as we will struggle with the tyres, for sure, but we were quite conservative with them today so that we improve our chances for tomorrow and now we will have to see. For now, it has been good to get to grips with this track again and a good day.”
The 24-car field is completed by HRT’s Narain Karthikeyan.
