Many expected a second Nico Rosberg pole position within he space of a week today, although the leading Mercedes driver could manage no more than fifth on the grid in Bahrain. On his final flying lap, the Shanghai winner was seen to run wide both at Turn 10 and the final corner, thus losing him time.
“In general, I felt very comfortable during qualifying today,” he explained. “However, as we have been focusing on our race pace, there is always a compromise in the qualifying setup.
“I think that I'm in a good position for the race for tomorrow. I am the only driver in the top five who has a set of new Option (Soft compound) tyres, which can be very useful at this circuit. It will be very important to drive carefully and find the right tyre management in the race, as the conditions are very tough out there.”
At Sakhir, the sheer amount of sand on the race track induces wheelspin, meaning the whole field is suffering with fast-degrading rear tyres.
