Although the team’s pace may not be headline-raising in comparison with the front of the F1 field, HRT’s Luis Pérez-Sala is highly satisfied with his squad’s progress so far this year. After failing to be on-track for any pre-season test, the cars of Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan have both finished every race they have started.
Prior to Melbourne, HRT had conducted just a single filming session in Barcelona to bed in their car. At the opening round they failed to qualify but, since then, race reliability has been 100 percent positive between Malaysia and Bahrain. Furthermore, Pérez-Sala believes now is when real progress will start to be made.
“We passed another stern test here in Bahrain with the high temperatures and I’m very satisfied with how everything went,” he said at Sakhir on Sunday. “We met our targets again and I want to thank the team once more for its excellent job.
“Perhaps the negative side was that we wore the tyres out a lot and that’s why we had to do a four-stop strategy. We tried to go for three with Pedro but he finished right on the limit, so maybe it wasn’t the best choice. Reliability was also good and the team is working well. We can say that we are already at the standard with which we finished last year. From here we must progress.”
At the moment, HRT remains 12th and last in the Constructors’ Championship and is attempting to regain the 11th spot it earned in both 2010 and 2011.
