Shortly after Pastor Maldonado won the Spanish Grand Prix, a press release was issued by Minardi from Italy. The Formula 1 minnows, who competed in the sport between 1985 and 2005, were first to test the Venezuelan seven years ago.
“I'm happy for Pastor,” says Giovanni Minardi. “He’s finally made it to where I thought he could. I was the first to believe in him, when we testing him at Fiorano back in 2005. The joy of his first pole position and victory in fact leaves me with a hint of regret that he is not my driver!
“Following that first test with Minardi, several managers – economically stronger than I – took him away from us, but the joy remains. I now continue to work with others to try and help them achieve their dreams. I wish by best congratulations for Pastor and his family.”
Maldonado is the first Venezuelan to win in Formula 1 history and first South American to cross the line first since Brazil’s Rubens Barrichello at Monza in 2009. Nowadays, Minardi is owned by Red Bull and known as Scuderia Toro Rosso.
