Alonso: Back-markers need to respect the rules
13 May 2012 – Fernando Alonso remains irritated to have been held up by Charles Pic when leading in Barcelona on Sunday afternoon. Shortly before Pastor Maldonado leapfrogged him for the lead, the Ferrari was delayed by the Marussia at Turn 1.
“We were a bit unlucky,” said Alonso, who after the race had been first to congratulate first-time winner Maldonado. “The Marussia got a penalty but obviously that is no solution now; hopefully people will now start o respect the rules because they could have lost us a race victory today.”
That moment aside, Alonso now shares the championship lead with Sebastian Vettel – a lead which he held on his own after winning in Malaysia.
“I am definitely a bit surprised by the amount of points we have scored. We have showed some signs of improvement with the car here in Barcelona and arrived here with optimism, but we need to wait and see how the championship sorts itself out.”
Alonso won in Barcelona with Renault in 2006.
