Not only did the Barcelona race result mark a maiden career victory for Pastor Maldonado and Williams’ first Formula 1 win since 2004, but the first since Mark Gillan has become Chief Operations Engineer for the Grove-based team. After the race, the Englishman praised a superb performance from his Venezuelan driver.
In his debut F1 season last year, Maldonado notched up the unenviable statistic of becoming Williams’ worst ever newcomer in terms of points scored. With critics having now been denied, Gillan is delighted with the outcome.
“What can I say – a massive result for the team and a stunning drive by Pastor,” Gillan comments.
“The whole race went well from start to finish, with every team member playing a vital part in this victory. We will allow ourselves a bit of time to savour the win and then will refocus to concentrate our efforts on continuing to improve throughout the season.
“Obviously it was disappointing that Bruno (Senna) got taken out by Michael (Schumacher) but he is looking forward to getting back into the car in Monaco.”
In a shocking end to the day, Gillan found himself soaked in fire extinguisher foam as a huge fire destroyed the Williams team garage around 90 minutes after the race.
