One year on from the accident which left him sidelined for two races, Sergio Pérez will start the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix from the back of the grid. During Q1 on Saturday afternoon, his Sauber suffered a left-front wheel problem and crashed in the Swimming Pool Complex.
“I am disappointed as I felt we could fight for a very good grid position here,” the Mexican explained. “We are still analysing everything to see if there was something wrong with the car. I was on my first lap, so was not pushing a lot.
“I went into the tunnel and had a lot of understeer and then I went into Turns 13 and 14 (entrance to Swimming Pool section). 13 was quite fine but in 14 I just went straight and didn’t get the car to turn.”
During practice earlier in the day, the left-front wheel of Pérez was hit by the Williams of Pastor Maldonado; it is yet to be confirmed whether the incidents are connected.
