This afternoon’s Monaco Grand Prix win was the second in the 11-year Formula 1 career of Mark Webber, who first took the chequered flag from pole position in 2010. The Australian is now joint second in the Drivers’ Championship, three points behind Fernando Alonso.
“I feel incredible! That was a very interesting race,” Webber commented in the post-race press conference. “The start was reasonably straightforward, managing to get a gap to Nico (Rosberg). But the weather seemed to be improving around the pit-stops, so we didn’t know whether to fit Intermediates or not.
"In the car coming over here (to the press conference), Fernando (Alonso) said how he had been praying for rain and then, when it came, he was more like, ‘No, no, no!’
“But I thought it was getting interesting when Seb (Vettel) was in the lead; I didn’t want him to get that magic 20 seconds to be able to pit and grab the victory – that wasn’t part of the plan!”
By winning in F1 for the eighth time, Webber has equalled the totals of Jacky Ickx and 1967 World Champion Denny Hulme.
