Azerbaijan enjoyed a taste of Formula 1 on Sunday as David Coulthard showed off the Red Bull demonstration car in capital city Baku. Approximately 45,000 spectators turned up, with the Scot navigating a makeshift course in the city centre.
Although he may now be a Mercedes DTM driver alongside his duties of F1 pundit for the BBC, Coulthard remains an ambassador of Red Bull Racing. This weekend he drove the all-conquering RB7, which took the squad to 12 race victories last year.
“It was great to drive the car on the main avenue of Baku,” said Coulthard, F1 championship runner-up for McLaren in 2001. “I really did not know what to expect when I was coming to Azerbaijan and I was so surprised that people gave us such a warm welcome! During the final hero lap I saw a little kid shouting my name - that moment made my day.”
Red Bull continues to hold an advantage in the 2012 constructors’ title race – a lead it took after Sebastian Vettel celebrated the team’s first win of the season in Bahrain.
