Vettel shouldn’t join Ferrari now, says Ecclestone

21 June 2012

Sebastian Vettel would be making a mistake to switch to Ferrari at this point of his career. That is the opinion of Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of the Formula One Group, who is widely known to share great respect for the double World Champion.

In an interview published jointly by Germany’s Sport Bild and Auto Bild, shown on the Ferrari website, Team Principal Stefano Domenicali explained that Vettel and Fernando Alonso would have no trouble in working together.

When asked for his opinion, Ecclestone replied:

“Seriously, all drivers want to drive for Ferrari at least once in their career, don’t they? I wouldn’t advise him to, as he’s still too young! Usually, a driver ends his career at Ferrari, therefore it could happen one day.”

However, the 81-year-old does agree that the German-Spanish combination would work.

“That wouldn’t be a problem,” he continues. “Both are drivers who are always looking for a new challenge and to be in the same team would be a new and big challenge. They would both think they can bear the other one, as they are sure of themselves and Stefano would do what was required to so that they were treated equally.

“It would be a case of doing what I did at Brabham (as Team Principal) in 1979 with Niki Lauda and Nélson Piquet. I told them, ‘Guys, it’s simple: whichever one of you is quickest is the team number 1.’”

Both with two world titles to their name, Vettel and Alonso have won a combination of 50 Grands Prix since Alonso first took the chequered flag in Hungary nine years ago.
