Ferrari’s F1 auction, set up to help those affected by the recent earthquakes in Italy, has raised an impressive 1.8 million euros (£1.5m). The natural disasters hit the region of Emilia-Romagna just over one week apart, on Sunday 20 and Tuesday 29 May.
The auction featured various components of Ferrari racing cars from over the years, including the nose cone of a 2009 F60 model which was snapped up for €23,000 (£18,500). Also going was a V8 engine from the F2008 car which won the Constructors’ Championship – that will head to Britain after being sold for €80,000 (£64,500), which is almost double its reserve price. Other items included helmets and driver overalls.
Also on offer was a 599XX road car, sold to an American for over €1.4m (£1.2m) – the special edition will contain signatures from Luca di Montezemolo, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa; furthermore, the two drivers will personally present the car at the Italian Grand Prix in September.
On top of this, one Russian customer donated €100,000 (£80,600) and revenue generated from the sale of Ferrari watches also contributed.
“A pole position result,” said di Montezemolo, Ferrari Chairman. “I knew I could count on the big-heartedness of the Ferraristi but they’ve still managed to surprise me once again. I would like to thank all the clients, collectors and enthusiasts that did their bit. Their bids have sent out a message of warmth and solidarity to the people in our region affected by this tragedy.”
Heading to Valencia this weekend, Ferrari sits fourth in the teams’ title race and is currently trailing leaders Red Bull by 67 World Championship points.
