Mika Salo is FIA driver steward for this weekend’s European Grand Prix in Valencia. The Formula 1 governing body had announced Emanuele Pirro earlier in the week, although the Finn – who last raced in F1 in 2002 – has arrived in the paddock.
Salo started 109 Grands Prix between 1994 and 2002, having ended his career when Toyota elected not to retain him. Now 45, he has two podium finishes to his name, scoring respective second and third places in the 1999 German and Italian Grands Prix.
He is best remembered for his stint with Ferrari in the second half of 1999, memorably donating victory at Hockenheim to championship contender Eddie Irvine. Three years later, he scored Toyota’s first F1 point by finishing sixth in Melbourne.
The Helsinki-born driver raced with seven teams across his Formula 1 career: Lotus, Tyrrell, Arrows, BAR, Ferrari, Sauber and Toyota.
