Vettel: Cooler Sunday will make a difference

2012 European Formula 1 Grand Prix: Friday second free practice results

Sebastian Vettel is expecting another changeable weekend in Valencia. Although the skies are expected to remain blue throughout, ambient temperatures on race day are forecast to be some five degrees lower than for tomorrow’s qualifying session.

Vettel topped the timesheets in Friday practice, running modified sidepods and new rear wind endplates. The German has sealed the last two poles and victories in Valencia.

“We have tried some new parts on the car today but the lap times have not really allowed us to have a fair conclusion of them yet,” explains the double World Champion. “It was important to have a clean practice today and I’m happy with what we did.

“The conditions will change again for Sunday I think; it was a bit cooler today, which will make a difference. It’s close between the teams and it’s not yet clear what the right strategy is for Sunday. Hopefully we can make a step forward tomorrow.”

Team-mate Mark Webber ended Friday in ninth spot.

“The car’s working well, but there are areas where we can improve,” the Australian admits. “I was happier on the harder tyre; the balance on the Soft tyres wasn’t great today, but we’ll work on that tonight. The wind was playing a role today – but there will be less tomorrow.”

Of the four European Grands Prix to be staged on the streets of Valencia so far, three have been won by the pole position sitter.
