Texas to run Historic Grand Prix on F1 weekend

22 June 2012

The brand-new Circuit of the Americas, home of the United States Grand Prix which will return to the Formula 1 calendar in November, has added a special historic race to spice up the weekend. A selection of classic Grand Prix cars will be in action.

The race will feature more than 50 owner-driver combinations, all competing in cars which took part in the World Championship between 1966 and 1983.

“The cars of Historic Grand Prix (HGP) encompass Formula 1’s golden era of the late 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, when the dramatic on-track action and distinctive personalities captured the imagination of a fast-growing, world-wide audience,” says James Kind, Director of Historic Grand Prix.

“HGP honours the brave drivers of these cars and the innovative designers and fabricators who crafted them, without the aid of computers or wind tunnels, by showcasing the authentic original cars in an exciting and colourful race at the Circuit of The Americas.”

The Texas facility is the first of two USA races for the next two F1 seasons. In 2013, New Jersey’s Port Imperial will become home to the inaugural Grand Prix of America.
