Jenson Button experienced a mixed day in Valencia on Friday. The McLaren driver, in desperate need of a clean weekend after scoring only once at the last four races, initially suffered KERS problems and much front wheel locking. Later on, he rounded out the second practice session in fourth position but is yet to be fully satisfied.
“The car didn’t feel too bad today,” said the 2009 World Champion, who won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix but now finds himself trailing the championship leader by 43 points. “We struggled a little with front locking and the lap time isn’t quite there yet, but we’ve made some changes that should start to improve that tomorrow.”
Button began the day with team-mate Lewis Hamilton’s base setup, then worked on changes in a bid to be happy with his car once again.
“We did a lot of work to improve the front locking, but we’re also going to go back on a few changes in order to get a setup that we know feels reasonably good,” he continued. “There are a couple of other changes we’re also considering for tomorrow which could be quite interesting.
“I think we’re quicker over a single lap than the timesheets suggest, but the car is still a little tricky to drive on Option (Soft compound) tyres. I’m confident that the changes we’re now making will make a difference, but whether that will be enough to challenge at the front is still an unknown because the field is so extremely competitive right now.”
Button’s best Valencia finish to date is his third place result of 2010.
