Maldonado better suited to harder tyres
23 June 2012 – Pastor Maldonado will be avoiding Pirelli’s Soft compound for as long as possible in Valencia on Sunday as. Although the less durable tyre is the quicker one, his Williams is better suited to the white-marked, Medium type. He will start from this position.
Maldonado appears to be enjoying Spanish circuits in 2012, having celebrated a maiden pole position and race victory in Barcelona. This afternoon, he recovered from an initial error in Q3 to put in a clean final lap, slotting in behind Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
“We've been working so hard to understand the car but there is still more performance to find on the Soft tyre,” explains the Venezuelan. “The team did a great job today, though, and Williams is getting stronger and stronger.
“It’s not only a good result for the team, but also for my country and there are so many Venezuelan fans here supporting me which is great to see. Strategy will be important tomorrow as it’s very hot, but it will make it difficult for everyone. I'm looking forward to pushing for a podium finish tomorrow.”
After seven races, Maldonado sits tenth in the Drivers’ Championship.
