It may have been a rare sight, but Fernando Alonso was in tears after winning the European Grand Prix in front of a home crowd in Valencia. The victory, from 11th place on the grid, came after passing various rivals, not least in a superb move on Romain Grosjean at the Safety Car restart.
Alonso last won in Spain for Renault at Barcelona six years ago. Today, he was forced to stop near the end of the lap but enjoyed plaudits from the crowd and marshals for around ten minutes, before being transported back to the pits.
“It’s hard to put into words have I feel now,” he said in the post-race press conference, flanked by Kimi Räikkönen and Michael Schumacher to ensure that all six World Champions have now finished on the podium this season.
“Winning a home race is a unique feeling. Ferrari is a very special team to drive for and it was amazing to see all of the fans in red along the straight. Spain had already been successful this weekend, in the European (football) Championship yesterday, so I’m very proud of how we are doing in sport as a country. This is definitely my most beautiful victory.”
With 111 points, Alonso retakes the lead of the Drivers’ Championship after. He heads Red Bull’s Mark Webber by a margin of 20.
