2012 European Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Toro Rosso’s Jean-Éric Vergne has been handed a double penalty after a stewards’ investigation at the European Grand Prix. The French came into contact with Heikki Kovalainen, having turned into the Caterham driver on Lap 27.

After pulling up alongside the Finn with the help of DRS on the run to Turn 12, Vergne moved across as contact caused punctures for both drivers.

‘In view of the series nature of the incident the Stewards have decided under Article 18.1 to apply two penalties,’ reads the official FIA report.

With Kovalainen having labeled the moment a 'rookie error', Vergne soon apologised through Twitter: 'All my apologies to Heikki Kovalainen...not rookie, just my mistake and will learn from it...'

Vergne now takes a ten-place grid drop for the following British Grand Prix as well as a fine of 25,000 euros (£20,000). Also carrying a grid drop (but of five places) into Silverstone is Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi, as a punishment for hitting Felipe Massa.
