Luca di Montezemolo was delighted to have been in Valencia as Fernando Alonso dramatically retook the lead of the World Championship. The Spaniard claimed his 29th career victory by storming through from 11th place on the grid.
With Ferrari keeping up its excellent pit work for 2012, jumping Kimi Räikkönen, Alonso pulled off strong on-track moves on Nico Hülkenberg, Pastor Maldonado, Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher, Paul di Resta and Romain Grosjean.
“This is Ferrari at its very best, the one everyone wants to see!” said di Montezemolo, Ferrari Chairman. “Fernando was extraordinary and it’s hard to find the words to describe his race. I am very sorry for Felipe (Massa), who was really unlucky; he was going very well and I’m sure he could have brought home a good result if not for all the problems he had.
“Today has shown the spirit of a team that never gives up and it also reflects the spirit of our homeland in Emilia Romagna, where so many people are going through a particularly difficult time after the earthquake a few weeks back: let’s hope this victory will at least have put a smile on their faces!”
After eight of the 20 rounds this year, Ferrari remains fourth in the Constructors’ Championship but now trails third placed Lotus by just four points.
