Having suffered a variety of ups and downs already this year, Michael Schumacher is approaching next weekend’s British Grand Prix in a philosophical state of mind. Although the German picked up his first Mercedes podium last time out in Valencia, he fully understands that a similar result cannot be guaranteed for Silverstone.
Schumacher won in Northamptonshire three times for Ferrari, with the first of those having come in the pit lane in 1998; he backed this up with two more in 2002 and 2004.
“Racing at Silverstone is a special moment every year,” he says on Friday. “It's quite simply the home of motorsport and I'm always amazed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of the British fans - as a racing driver, it's great to experience this passion for our sport.
“On a personal level, I have many contrasting memories of this circuit; good, not so good and some that are even a little strange... as for how things will go this year, I'd prefer to wait and see. We have already seen plenty of races this year that turned out differently to the expectations before the weekend.
“Of course, we want to take the momentum from our result in Valencia and put on a good show at Silverstone, especially because this is one of our home races. It goes without saying that we want to give everybody in Brackley and Brixworth a result to be proud of this weekend.”
Having picked up a much needed 15 points at the European Grand Prix, Schumacher is now on 17 for the season and is currently 13th in the Drivers’ Championship.
