Kobayashi apologises for pit lane accident

2012 British Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Kamui Kobayashi has said sorry to the Sauber pit crew, with several members having been struck when the Japanese misjudged his braking point at Silverstone on Sunday. Several men were taken down, with the front jack man also falling to the floor.

Although some personnel did require medical assistance, nobody suffered major injuries and all should be in a fit state for the next race at Hockenheim. The incident also cost Sauber in the race, as Kobayashi had been running in as high as fifth position.

“First of all, the accident at the pit-stop was my fault and I want to apologise to the team,” Kobayashi commented. “Of course I had to push hard for points, but without doubt I braked too late in the pit lane.

“The front wheels locked, I couldn’t control the car and that is how I overshot the pit box. I am terribly sorry that happened and I hope the three mechanics I hit get well soon. Up to that happening, my race was good. I had improved from 17th on the grid to a top ten position and was hoping for points.”

The incident effectively ended a what could have been a strong day for Sauber, with Sergio Pérez having collided with the Williams of Pastor Maldonado on Lap 12.
