Webber admits to initial Ferrari discussions

10 July 2012

Mark Webber has admitted that he recently held tentative discussions with Ferrari over a potential future at the Maranello squad, but felt it was ultimately an easy choice to remain with double World Champions Red Bull for the 2013 season.

The 35-year-old, who joined the Milton Keynes-based squad at the beginning of 2007, labelled 'continuity' as one of the main reasons behind his decision.

"There were discussions with Ferrari, but my decision was to stay here," said Webber. "It’s been an interesting few months, but the continuity and desire for me to continue at Red Bull was very strong."

With Fernando Alonso's lead trimmed to just 13 points in the Drivers' championship courtesy of Webber's impressive Silverstone triumph, the Australian has re-iterated that he is fully focused reeling the Ferrari driver in over the next few races.

"My main focus is on this year’s Championship, which is very important," he added of the current title race situation. "In addition it’s an amazing bunch of guys and girls at Red Bull Racing and I really, really like working with them. That has a huge effect on me and how I perform in the car and it helped me in my decision."

Webber will begin his 12th Formula 1 season - his seventh for Red Bull - in 2013.
