Frijns: A good Formula 1 introduction
16 July 2012 – At the weekend, Robin Frijns drove a Formula 1 car for the first time. The Dutchman received the outing as a prize from Red Bull, having been leader of Formula Renault 3.5 at the halfway point of the season. The excursion came at the Moscow Raceway, which was hosting the latest rounds for the World Series by Renault package.
“It is obviously a step above Formula Renault 3.5,” Frijns told GPUpdate.net. “I did three laps on Saturday and five on Sunday, making it eight in total; so it wasn’t so much but it was rather nice and a good learning experience which definitely left me wanting more.
“Formula 1 is still the top and now I know a bit more of what to expect ahead of the rookie test in Abu Dhabi later this year.”
As Formula Renault 3.5 continued in Russia, Frijns won the opening race before tumbling to 17th in a difficult second encounter on Sunday. Competing for Fortec Motorsport, he remains championship leader and now heads Sam Bird by ten points.
