Lewis Hamilton has pinpointed the Formula 1 summer break as an ideal time for organising his latest contract. His current deal with McLaren is a five-year arrangement which terminates at the end of 2012, having been put together following his highly successful debut season in 2007. The summer break will begin on 29 July.
With the upcoming German and Hungarian Grands Prix running back-to-back, F1 will then host no race in August in order to allow those working inside the sport some time off. Hamilton sees this as the perfect opportunity to confirm his arrangements.
“We haven’t discussed anything yet, but it would be nice to have something in place over this summer break,” Hamilton told Russia’s R-Sport, having taken part in a Moscow street demonstration at the weekend. “We will all then be more relaxed and can make a more sensible decision about the future; you have to base your decisions on long periods of time.
“These people (McLaren) have supported me and they got me into Formula 1, but I also want to be winning. I’m not so young anymore, so I just want to make sure that I do whatever I need to do to make the right decision and maximise my career. I need to make sure I’m winning.”
With Mark Webber having already signed a further one-year extension with Red Bull for 2013, any chance there may have been of Hamilton leaving McLaren is now even slimmer than previously. Less concrete is the destiny of Felipe Massa, who is targeting at least one more season with Ferrari and is currently enjoying a rise in form on-track.
