Schumacher: 2013 decision to come in October
20 July 2012 – Michael Schumacher has pinpointed October as the month in which he and Mercedes will announce whether or not he will continue racing in Formula 1. However, the actual decision is expected to be made during the upcoming summer break.
After next weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, F1 will have four weekends off and all team factories must close for a period of a fortnight. During that interval, the Mercedes-Schumacher decision is expected to be made; the German team has already stated on numerous occasions that the choice will lie solely with the seven-time World Champion.
“I came into Formula 1 with Mercedes (in 2010), hoping to win races and maybe even the championship if all went well,” Schumacher told reporters at Hockenheim. “We all know how things have gone, but we have made a big step between last year and this year and hopefully there will still be plenty of reasons to be positive for the rest of this season.”
When pressed about his future, Schumacher replied:
“Well, you can keep on asking questions about next year but October is when your questions might be answered…”
Schumacher returned to F1 with a three-year contract, which will officially expire on 31 December 2012. His conclusion will be a key factor in the current driver market, with the likes of Paul di Resta and Nico Hülkenberg named as possible Mercedes contenders.
