Ex-sponsor files bankruptcy against Doornbos

25 July 2012

Robert Doornbos is currently at loggerheads with former sponsor Harry Muermans, who is trying to reclaim the money he invested over the course of the ex-Formula 1 driver's motorsport career. According to Dutch daily newspaper De Telegraaf, Muermans has filed bankruptcy against the driver in recent weeks.

Doornbos has been asked to pay one million euros (783 thousand pounds) by Muermans, but he is unwilling to do so and says it is an attempt to 'destroy his career'.

"What is happening now is all unnecessary", said 30-year-old Doornbos. "It is not based on facts. As you know, I am currently no longer active in racing through the actions of Muermans.

"He has largely made my career, especially in Formula 1. He has helped me through sponsorship. And now he tries, because he is in financial trouble, to destroy my career. "

From the beginning of their partnership back in 2005 through to the year of 2008, Muermans invested an estimated 11 million euros (8.6 million pounds) in Doornbos and his racing exploits, with the latter spending time competing in Formula 1, Champ Car World Series, Superleague Formula, A1GP and most recently IndyCar.
