Doornbos declared bankrupt by Dutch court

27 July 2012

Former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos has been declared bankrupt. That was the verdict from the court of Rotterdam on Friday, with the bankruptcy having been requested by ex sponsor Harry Muermans. This has provoked a furious reaction from the driver, who raced for Minardi and Red Bull during 2005 and 2006.

“All of this happening now is completely unnecessary,” Doornbos told De Telegraaf. “It is not based on facts. As you know, I am no longer active in racing through the actions of Muermans. He largely made my career by helping me with my sponsorship, especially in F1. He is now trying to destroy it because he is in financial trouble himself.”

Muermans is now demanding a million euros (£785,000) from Doornbos; this is the amount supposedly missed out on by Muermans as Doornbos made sponsorship deals outside of Corporate Eagle – the company set up by both men.

The parties continue to disagree over certain large amounts of money, which Doornbos argues was sponsorship but Muermans claims was put down on paper as loans.
