Pack up: Driver holidays begin
6 August 2012 – It’s that time of year again. When F1 goes quiet across four weekends and the circus scatters across all corners of the globe. Some will stay at home, others may venture somewhere more exotic, but the desired effect is shared. Relaxation.
Not everybody will be on holiday. Although the team factories must shut up shop for a fortnight, the communication and marketing departments remain open. There is no rest for the wicked either, as GPUpdate.net can prove because you are reading this article right now…it’s a far cry from Jenson Button’s triathlon in the Philippines!
“I’m going to the Olympics for a few days, here and there,” says Red Bull’s Mark Webber. “As well as that, I’ll do a bit of mountain biking, hanging out with the dogs and going to friends’ barbecues.”
What if you’re a World Champion? Sebastian Vettel is aiming for ‘peace and quiet’ and ‘sun by the sea’. The German will resume his training early in a bid to get the jump on his rivals at Spa, but Red Bull are expected to struggle for straight-line speed so the relaxation should be enjoyed.
Kamui Kobayashi will head for a beach and contemplate collecting his first F1 silverware sooner rather than later, while Pedro de la Rosa keeps up tradition by travelling to the east coast of Mallorca – something he has done since the age of three – with wife María and his three daughters, who normally reside in Munich. Sergio Pérez has slightly different plans.
“For the first two weeks in August I will go with my family to a quiet place in the US,” says the Mexican Sauber driver. “The other two weeks I will be using to prepare myself for the second half of the season because I want to come back strong.”
As for Vitaly Petrov, he’ll be at home in Russia, but exactly what he is planning is anyone’s guess: “I don’t want to tell you exactly where I am going because then I’ll see a lot of fans there! I think every person in their life prefers to go home to relax. Maybe it’s nothing really special in my town - well, there are some really beautiful places – but that is where I was born and that is why my heart is there. I think it’s the same for every person. England, Spain or Italy, whatever…so that is why I just like to be at home.”
Whether on holiday or not, you can rest assured that GPUpdate.net will continue to bring you free-of-charge, daily F1 news updates. Just as we have since 1998.
