Sauber not worried about Pérez exit

5 August 2012

Sauber are not preoccupied by the ongoing reports linking Sergio Pérez with a possible switch to Ferrari in 2013. Instead, the Swiss team is firmly placing all attention on fifth position in this year’s Constructors’ Championship.

Pérez is driving for Sauber on loan from Ferrari, where he is part of the company’s Driver Academy. He has already tested with the Scuderia in the past and is a general favourite for replacing Felipe Massa and racing alongside Fernando Alonso; two podium finishes so far in 2012, in Malaysia and Canada, have only fuelled the debate.

“We make our driver line-up for a whole season, so from that point of view there will be no changes,” Sauber CEO Monisha Kaltenborn, who is destined to become Team Principal when Peter Sauber retires next year, told the official F1 website.

“We are not worried and we are in the middle of a season that hopefully will be a successful one for us - at least all indications point in that direction - and our drivers have to focus solely on this season. Regarding the future, we are not under pressure and I am laid back about it.”

Should Sauber claim fifth in this year’s standings, the result would be its best as an independent constructor in a decade. It currently sits sixth, 36 points behind Mercedes.
