Stewart: Ferrari would be a mistake for Vettel

8 August 2012

Sebastian Vettel would be making a huge error in moving to Ferrari at this time. That is the opinion of triple F1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who believes Fernando Alonso and his current form would easily dispatch of any team-mate at Maranello.

Alonso joined Ferrari at the start of 2010 whereas Vettel has been with Red Bull Racing since a year earlier. The German has already committed to his current team until the end of 2014, whereas Alonso signed a deal up to and including 2016 just before last season’s Spanish Grand Prix.

“I wouldn’t do that at this time,” Stewart, title winner of 1969, 1971 and 1973, explained in the James Allen on F1 Podcast. “I think Alonso’s far too strong for that. I think Alonso is so mature that he would see anybody off because of the relationship he has already built within Ferrari.

“I think it’s much better to let that pass for the moment and stay with Red Bull because he’s got a team of people that he knows intimately now, who are really imperative for him to have and they feel that it’s imperative for them to have him. I wouldn’t break that mould at this time. In fact, I would almost wait until I had a very bad year before I would think of leaving.

“Then my option would be: ‘who am I going to get who is going to provide me with what I need’ – and it may not necessarily be Ferrari.”

After 11 of 20 Grands Prix in 2012, Alonso leads the Drivers’ Championship by 40 points from Red Bull’s Mark Webber, with Vettel a further two in arrears. So far in his second title-defending campaign, the German has won only a single race in Bahrain.
