Buemi not planning back-marker return

Buemi not planning back-marker return

10 August 2012

After being left on the sidelines by Red Bull at the end of 2011, Sébastien Buemi is now on the lookout for a return to Formula 1 next season. However, the Swiss insists that he will not be returning if his only option is a back-of-the-grid team.

Both Buemi and Spanish team-mate Jaime Alguersuari were told their Toro Rosso race positions were safe last year, only to be dropped at season’s end. The former remains reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and claims his driving style is similar to Sebastian Vettel’s.

“My style is very similar to Vettel’s,” Buemi tells Germany’s 20 Minuten. “Webber is more aggressive. I am able to adapt my driving style according to the wishes of the engineers. It’s good to be third driver for Red Bull; it’s the number one team in Formula 1 and I still have a foot in the door. That is important, even just to get back onto the grid next year.”

When asked what he is considering for 2013, Buemi replied:

“There are options. More precisely, I cannot tell you anything until the ink is dry and on a contract. All I can say is that it looks good at the moment.”

He does insist, though, that he would not sign up with a back-marker outfit.

“No, I would not,” he verifies. “Of course I want to race again, but those teams are just too far away from the rest and aren’t in the same race. After just 15 laps you end up having to be careful not to get in the way of quicker cars.”

Buemi made his F1 debut in 2009, scoring two points in his first race.
