Narain Karthikeyan admits that qualifying has been his downfall so far in 2012. Including the Australian Grand Prix where both HRT cars failed to make the 107 percent cut, the Indian has been out-qualified by team-mate Pedro de la Rosa eleven to zero.
“I think that my race performance has been very strong, with my 15th place in Monaco standing out, but in qualifying I’ve been a bit weaker,” Karthikeyan admits on Thursday. “Right now I’m about three tenths behind Pedro and that’s something I have to improve in this second half, no doubt about it…for now I give myself a six or a seven (ranking out of ten) and, if I improve my results in qualifying, then an eight or a nine.”
The 35-year-old is now working hard across the Formula 1 summer break.
“I’m not really taking a holiday now because I’ve got a lot of activities to attend, so I’ll have to wait until the championship ends,” he begins to sum up. “I hope to have a small gap to spend some time with my family in India and train hard. The season has been quite intense and you don’t get the chance to train in the gym every day because you’re constantly travelling and living in hotels.”
Karthikeyan returned to F1 in 2011, having previously raced for Jordan in 2005.
