Alonso: Very hard to say if Kubica can return
20 August 2012 – Fernando Alonso has explained that close friend Robert Kubica's future in Formula 1 remains very much uncertain, with the Polish driver still recovering from a violent crash in the Ronde di Andora rally in February 2011. The two-time World Champion is in contact with his former on-track rival, who has yet to regain full health.
"It’s very hard to say whether Robert will return to 100 percent fitness and be able to race again in Formula 1," Alonso said in an interview for September's F1 Racing.
"Now and again we speak and I know how much it hurts him to be so far away from what has always been his world. He has to keep calm and think first and foremost about recovering total functionality of his body, then he can think again about racing."
Kubica was widely tipped to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari prior to his accident, with the Kraków-born driver regarded as one of Formula 1's fastest men.
