Piquet Jr. wins maiden NASCAR truck race

21 August 2012

Nelson Piquet Jr. became the first Brazilian to win a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the Michigan International Speedway last weekend, taking the chequered flag at the wheel of his Turner Motorsports Chevrolet. The former F1 driver adopted an alternative strategy after a clash with Kurt Busch, paving the way to victory.

"Me and (Crew Chief) Chris (Carrier) have been fighting for this win since the beginning of last year and we finally made it," said Piquet, who departed the Renault F1 Team in dramatic fashion in 2009. "It came in a dramatic way, but it came.

"It doesn't matter how, but we did it and I'm really happy that the whole team stayed behind me this whole time. It is a little weight off my back and for the whole family. I am just living to do what our family always did, win races and win championships."

After his win, which will go down as only the second non-American triumph in the Camping World Truck Series, Piquet Jr. sits eighth in the overall standings.
